How to ask for a letter of recommendation

  Special Paid Research Participation (below)

There are several ways for undergraduates to participate in research in the Mind and Brain Laboratory. Many take a Psychology 400 or 401 class (up to two of each can be taken for credit towards your degree). This entails spending 9 or 10 hours per week in the laboratory helping with ongoing research. Students may be involved in running behavioral or EEG brain research subjects. Writing programs in E-prime (many students learn this easy program in the lab) to present experiment stimuli to subjects, and analyzing behavioral and brain data are also activities often carried out by undergraduates. Often, a student who does well and becomes interested will come back for a second semester and conduct their own research project. This can result in authorship on a journal publication.

This is an important experience for students, because they can receive a very good letter of recommendation. Applying to graduate schools includes submitting three letters of recommendation. One that recommends the student as a responsible, experienced researcher can significantly enhance the probability of acceptance into a good program.

Interested students should see Dr. Kroger personally to discuss becoming involved in research in his laboratory.

The Mind and Brain lab is looking for some special participants, preferably NMSU undergraduate or graduate students, for mind/brain studies. Participants will be paid $25 for approximately an hour, during which they will have an MRI of their brain taken at Memorial or Mountain View Hospital. The actual scan takes about 10 minutes. Students will get a copy of the MRI pictures of their own brain, in digital form they can use for web sites, T-shirts, or whatever. Then, these subjects will be invited to participate in EEG studies, for which they will also be paid. When we have an MRI picture of one's brain, we can conduct higher-quality EEG research. We wish to include students who are 1) interested and involved in scientific research, 2) who will be at NMSU for at least two years following the MRI, 3) who are willing to then be subjects in EEG studies occurring thereafter (for which they will be compensated approximately $20 per study, for approximately 2 hours' time). It is cost effective for us to get MRIs of participants who will be in several EEG studies, rather than pay for separate MRIs for each participant for each EEG study. Students who may be interested in participating are invited to contact Dr. Jim Kroger at jkroger AT nmsu DOT edu, or Science Hall room 326.
